One of the greatest challenges and most important responsibilities
facing Independent Schools as they attempt to diversify their communities is
hiring. The impulse to hire a person of color is only step one; actively seeking
out and pursuing teachers and administrators of color is step two. Most
importantly, step three is to actually hire a person of color. This is not always easy for schools but
it is essential for true inclusion and diversity to be reached.
Below are some of the services and contacts available to those
hiring and those looking for employment.
The National Employment Minority Network, established in 1994, is
a national resource organization committed to assisting schools and
organizations in the identification and recruitment of minority students and
professionals.
Since 1994, nemnet has worked with over 300 schools, colleges and
universities and organizations and in turn, assisted thousands of minority
students and professionals in their search for professional development and
employment.
Established in 1998 to help education and nonprofit organizations
increase the diversity of their staff. Since then more than 1000 organizations
and 10,000 individuals have utilized Diversity Network services.
Perhaps the biggest name in Independent School hiring. Despite what some might consider a
de-emphasis in its attention to folks of color, some administrators will ask
for and receive the resumes for all people of color candidates
Dedicated to serving the Students and Alumni of Historically Black
Colleges & Universities, HBCUCareerCenter.com delivers the Internet's
largest job collection specifically for HBCU Students and Graduates, all direct
from the hiring companies and organizations that recruit HBCU talent.
A Diversity Recruiting and Consulting firm created by graduates of
color from the Independent School environment. The aim is to assist Independent
Schools, Public Schools and corporations currently undergoing cultural
transformations, in reaching their diversity goals.
The Association of Independent Schools in New England. AISNE will have a job fair soon after
the New Year specifically targeted for people of color and many schools from
Boston and beyond will attend.
An organization which supports teachers, administrators, parents,
and students who believe that diversity and multiculturalism are endemic to
quality education for all.
POCIS supports increasing diversity in independent schools at the
student, faculty, administration, and board level. We also encourage schools to
contract with women and people of color for goods and services.
A group of faculty and staff of independent schools in the New
York area that aims to provide support for the teachers and staff of color in
these independent schools.
This group is limited to people of color. We feel strongly
that in order for us to do the work of supporting and affirming each other and
our experiences as people of color in independent schools, we need a "safe
space" in order to accomplish our mission.
The New York Interschool
Association, Inc.
A consortium of eight independent schools that sponsors programs
for
member schools and the New York City independent school community,
offers The Faculty Diversity Search - a program to recruit beginning and
experienced teachers of color for positions in over 20 New York City
independent schools.
A program for college students of color interested in teaching at
an Independent School. With the freedom of a financial stipend and the
assurance of professional support, selected Fellows set a course toward
developing their professional skills while exploring the career opportunities
available in private independent schools. Regardless of major, McMurry Fellows
apply their knowledge and receive hands-on experience throughout the
departments, programs, and activities in their host school.
